GLOBAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP WEEK AT SCHOOL OF DESIGN
From November 12-16, 2018, Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) will inspire people around the world through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. Meet three GBC alumni from the design and jewellery sectors and hear about their journey as an entrepreneur! The Founders Panel will be held on November 13 (1-2 pm) at 230 Richmond St E.
TORONTONIANS WHO ARE SHAKING UP THE TECH SECTOR
Meet Think Dirty, one of the resident entrepreneurs at the Incubator and the first winner from the IT’S A START Pitch Competition. Lily Tse founded Think Dirty, an app that educates consumers about ingredients in health and beauty products. Tse got her start when she received a $5,000 grant after a pitch competition at George Brown, which helped Think Dirty get some extra leverage. More online in October’s issue of torontolife.com

WE’RE MOVING TO DANIELS WATERFRONT IN THE NEW YEAR
The Digital Media and Gaming Incubator (including the Digifest planning team) will be moving to the new George Brown College – School of Design campus at the Daniels Waterfront building in early 2019. The new facility will house all the School of Design programs along with the Innovation Exchange, an initiative that will explore design solutions for the tech-driven era. The campus is located just across from Sugar Beach at the corner of Queen”s Quay and lower Jarvis.
startGBC OPENS ENTREPRENEURIAL HUB
On September 20, startGBC celebrated the official opening of its new Co-working Space — a 1,200-square-foot facility for students and graduates to develop their business plans and collaborate with faculty, staff and industry partners to make start-up dreams become a reality. You can find the startGBC Co-working Space on the fourth floor at the Daphne Cockwell Centre for Health Sciences at Waterfront Campus.
LAUNCH YOUR EXPORT ACTION PLAN (LEAP) WORKSHOP
The Incubator and Canada-Ontario Export Forum (COEF) presented a workshop to help kick-start the global growth strategies of local startups on September 19, featuring topics including assessing export readiness and accessing the COEF Toolbox on resources, programs and funding.
2018 OVERSEAS TALENT & ENTREPRENEURSHIP CONFERENCE (OTEC) – BEIJING
This year’s IT’S A START Pitch Competition winner, InStage, will be joining the Digital Media and Gaming Incubator, on a start-up trip to China. InStage has developed a virtual reality training tool that improves verbal communication skills. They will be representing Canada at the Overseas Talent and Entrepreneurship Conference (OTEC) and Global Pitch event in Beijing this August. This is an exclusive opportunity for start-ups to win the $1M RMB grand prize, fast track their expansion into China and meet with an international network of investors. The Overseas Talent Entrepreneurship Conference (OTEC) is a government-sponsored event in Beijing that aims to connect international entrepreneurs with investment and growth opportunities, and to help them launch their start-ups in China.
The Incubator has been successfully organizing the IT’S A START Pitch Competition for emerging start-ups in Toronto over the past five years. IT’S A START is an annual pitch competition for digital startups held during Digifest, the city’s leading three-day festival on digital innovation and creativity. The winning startup will participate in a four-day international conference and global pitch competition in August. Over thirty teams from ten countries will take part in this event, making this a great opportunity to connect international entrepreneurs with investment and growth opportunities in China.

MEET FINISH LINE GAMES
Finish Line Games was started by Brandon Hicks and Daniel Posner and both have been faculty in the game programs at George Brown College. Their game Maize – now available for PC and PlayStation 4 – is best described as “A first-person adventure game about what happens when a couple of research scientists misinterpret a government memo and create sentient corn. MEET PROPERTY SPARK
Meet Sam Battista, founder of PropertySpark, a startup at the Digital Media and Gaming Incubator that helps the real estate industry with social media advertising. Although he’s sitting in front of a poster emblazoned with the word “sorry,” Sam is anything but apologetic. IT’S A START REPRESENTS CANADA IN BEIJING!
The Digital Media and Gaming Incubator is excited to team up with the Overseas Talent Entrepreneurship Conference (OTEC) to feature the first Canadian startup to pitch at the Global Final in Beijing, China. The Incubator has been successfully organizing the IT’S A START Pitch Competition for emerging startups in Toronto over the past five years. The winning startup participated in a four-day international conference and global pitch competition in Beijing this August. Over twenty teams from ten countries took part in this event, making this a great opportunity to connect international entrepreneurs with investment and growth opportunities in China. This year’s IT’S A START winner Genecis Enviro Tech took part in this trip. Founded by Luna Yu, this startup is focused on recycling food scraps into value-added products such as bio-plastics, biofuels and food additives. The Overseas Talent Entrepreneurship Conference (OTEC) is a government-sponsored event in Beijing that aims to connect international entrepreneurs with investment and growth opportunities, and to help them launch their startups in China.

Ten start-ups competed at the 2017 IT’S A START Pitch Competition held at Digifest in the Corus Quay buidling. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners: Flashfood (1st place), Genecis EnviroTech Inc. (2nd place), Trip Swell Inc.- Jauntin (3rd place), and HelpWear (People’s Choice)! Flashfood and Genecis will be representing Canada at the Overseas Talent + Entrepreneurship Conference being held this August in Beijing.
